St Johann in Tirol offers surprisingly good value as well as a whole host of winter activities beyond skiing and snowboarding

The same name is given to the region as a whole, with the pretty Tirolean towns of St Johann in Tirol, Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf sitting within it and offering a great family atmosphere and a varied ski area with 171km (106 miles) of perfectly groomed pistes, not to mention another 250km (155 miles) of cross-country ski trails.

If you love to cover distance on your holiday, then you can even opt for the Super ski pass, which opens up all 2,750km (1,708 miles) of pistes across the Kitzbüheler Alpen – a challenge to get out and explore if ever you needed one.

But the true charm of St Johann in Tirol is its laid-back Tirolean attitude, gentle slopes that are ideal for beginners and families and the sheer variety of other activities to keep your holiday interesting – from snowshoeing and tobogganing to sleigh rides and relaxing spa treatments. There are plenty of other delights to explore too.

1 Take a hike

We all love zipping down the slopes on skis or a snowboard, but why not slow it down and discover the beautiful scenery of the Kitzbüheler Alps on foot? There are a host of routes to choose from, whether just hiking or heading out on a snowshoe adventure. Sign up to hike with an experienced guide and they will show you the most scenic parts of the region as well as the best places to stop for a warming lunch and tipple as a reward for all that exertion. For added romance, try an evening hike, using flaming torches to light your way through snowy meadows and pine forests.

2 Make like an Olympian

Have you ever watched the biathlon during the Winter Olympics and wanted to try it for yourself? Well you can at St Johann in Tirol. The difficult sport combines cross-country skiing with shooting and at the Biathlon Centre in Erpfendorf you can sign up for a taster session with an instructor. There are ski schools to teach you to cross-country ski as well, and with a vast network of pistes stretching over 250km (155 miles), this is the perfect place to get to grips with the sport.

3 Dive in

If you want to soothe those aching muscles after days on the slopes, escape to Panorama Badewelt, the indoor-outdoor pool complex of warm waters, perfect for floating away aches and pains. There are saunas, steam baths and massage treatments inside, while the outside pool is transformed in winter and becomes an ice skating rink that the whole family will love.

4 Say cheers

One of the delights of a ski holiday is stopping off at a rustic mountain hut for a refreshing beer. Why not discover a bit more about one of Tirol’s leading beer brands with a visit to the Huber Bräu Brewery in St Johann in Tirol? You’ll spot it from its famous tower, with the fascinating brewery in the lower part and a restaurant serving local produce (washed down with plenty of beer) at the top. It is worth a visit just for the views as you enjoy a glass of the good stuff.

5 Enjoy a sleigh ride

If you are looking for a different way to explore, why not soak up the romance of the snowy mountains on a horse-drawn sleigh? There is nothing more beautiful than the pristine silence of the mountains as you glide through the snow, your sleigh pulled by two horses. For something a little more active, try a winter tour on a Segway, or speed down one of the various toboggan runs across the mountainside. There are plenty of ways to explore your surroundings even if you want a break from skiing and snowboarding.
